The first Europeans to visit Menasha were French traders from Quebec in 1634-35. They named their village after Marquette's party that visited the area in 1639-40. A post office was established at Menasha in 1836, and a train station was built on the riverbank in 1848. In 1865, men of the 8th U.S. Infantry Regiment (Cavalry) founded a camp near Menasha for troops during the American Civil War. That same year, Menasha became part of Racine County and had its own government under an act passed by the state legislature. In 1916 it incorporated as a city with a population of 602 people and it has since grown to over 1,000 residents today (2010). One of Racine County's most famous mayors was Rollin Mclntyre who served from 1951 until his retirement in 1976; he also chaired the county board of supervisors from 1961 until his retirement six years later. He is buried at Greenwood Cemetery there with wife Mamie McNaught McCurtry Mclntyre and five children: Kathleen (Katharine), John (Johnnie), Rollin Jr., Connie (Connie Louise), and Maxine (Maxine Evelyn). According to Census Bureau estimates released in 2018, about 60% of all businesses operating within 10 miles of Menasha are small businesses – this number jumps to 98% when including those located within 25 miles of town limits!
