Menasha is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Menasha River in southwestern Milwaukee County. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee-West Allis metropolitan area and is home to Waukesha County headquarters for the Wisconsin Department of Justice. The Menasha River was named for Menasha, Germany, where a fur trader had founded a trading post in 1795. In 1836, Menasha became part of the United States when it was organized as part of Racine County. The first white settlers arrived in 1837 and began to build homes and businesses around what would become Menasha Boulevard/Uptown Road. They were joined by black Americans who had migrated from Indiana and Illinois during the early 1830s following natural disasters such as floods that destroyed much farmland near Chicago. In 1851, men from Racine petitioned Congress to create Waukesha County, which included parts of now-Milwaukee and Waukesha counties; Menasha was added to the county on February 24, 1851. In 1862, after Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation freed all slaves in America, many African Americans started moving into this rural area seeking opportunity and freedom from slavery while also helping contribute to development across what would become known as "the color line." On July 6th 1907 local resident John Prentice set up an electric streetlight that replaced an oil lamp at Third Street & State Street after years of lobbying by residents including future Mayor Tom Barrett In 1921 construction began on Mile Marker 9 (later Eisenhower Parkway) which linked downtown with West Allis through a new interchange connecting I-94 with US Highway 2 making it possible for people living west of Milwaukee Avenue to reach downtown without having to carpool or take buses
Menasha was founded in 1852 by James Menasha and his wife, Emma. The town was named after Menasha's great-grandfather, who had settled in the area in 1824. The townsite was laid out on a square mile of land that contains the present day town of Menasha and portions of the villages of Appleton, Waukesha, Racine and Milwaukee. In 1857, Menasha became a city under the leadership of Mayor John C. Goode.
