The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Menasha were French colonists who founded Fort Rouge in 1784. In 1836, Menasha became part of Dodge County when it was organized from parts of Crawford and Milwaukee counties. The town site was chosen for its location on the Dual Creek which formed between two high hills about southeast of downtown Menasha. The creek flowed west until it converged with the Mississippi River near North Mound, then continued flowing east to join the Des Moines River near Appleton. The Town Site selection meeting on November 17, 1836 resulted in 1 acre (4 hectares) of land being purchased for $2 per head from John Prentice and Solomon Davenport and conveyed to Capt’n George Hennepin as security for repayment of money borrowed by them at 6%. On December 3, 1836 Samuel Morse donated his lot adjacent to that sold by Hennepin for $10 per acre (a total cost including interest andFreeman & Co.'s 8% insurance). A small schoolhouse was built there in 1837 but soon burned down; a larger one was erected soon afterward. A post office called Menasha was established in 1839 but no mail reached it until 1840 because of distance problems caused by their own transportation system which consisted only of wagons carrying goods upriver over snow drifts! menasha@coxinternetmail.com . It served as an information center for settlers living around Dodge City due to lack of other communication facilities during this early period within Dakota Territory! In 1841 a brick store building with a shop front and four rooms upstairs had been erected on Main Street north side just east of present day First Avenue South; prospered until burned down in 1861 during Union bombardment during war against Mexico; rebuiltusing lumber brought overland from Waukesha County via Prairie du Chien In 1865 James Fenton opened a general store there which grew into one of America's largest grocery stores chain open today with over 350 locations worldwide! A blacksmith shop also operated here before being bought out by J&J Foods Company who took it over in 1984.; later becoming known as KFC International supercenter! Menasha is a town in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 2,653 at the 2010 census. Menasha is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha metropolitan area. It was founded in 1847 as a station on the Chicago and Pacific Railroad. The first settler in Menasha was John Pritzker, who arrived in 1847. He erected a small log cabin on the present site of Menasha High School. In 1865, men from Menasha organized themselves into a town corporation and built the first courthouse and jail in Menasha. The town center was platted out in 1867 and named for George Mathers, an American banker who had donated land to the community. In 1902, Menasha became one of five towns incorporated within Wisconsin's Racine County when that county was created from parts of Racine and Kenosha counties. At that time, Racine County included all of Milwaukee except for its eastern border which lay within Dane County. The other four towns were Appleton (1902), Brookfield (1903), Waukesha (1905), and West Allis (1907). During World War II, Menasha served as headquarters for military units stationed in Wisconsin during Operation Overlord including General Dwight Eisenhower's army corps headquarters at Green Bay; Lieutenant Colonel Elliott Abrams' 1st Armored Division Headquarters at Oshkosh; Major General James Haggerty's Twelfth Army Group Headquarters at Manitowoc; Commander-in-Chief Northwest Allied Expeditionary Force - Supreme Commander Patton's Third Army Headquarters at Madison;and Ninth Army Group Headquarters at Janesville Junction. In 1951, Menasha became home to what is now UW–Madison’s Wiseman Campus after it moved from Wauwatosa campus near Milwaukee following budget cuts by then Governor Jock Mahoney following the Korean War protests against UAW labor management practices there by then students known as “Hackensack” students or "Hackers." In 1970 Grote Paper Products began operations here followed by White Corporation until 1984 when Dow Chemical announced plans to move their manufacturing away from Midwestern cities such as Cincinnati/Middletown because of rising costs associated with air pollution Control regulations brought about by government programs like National Environmental Policy Act Amendments introduced under Reaganomics led by new President George H W Bush Sr.). After years of discussion between Dow Chemical representatives and local business leaders over various options including relocating production to Mexico City or even Riverside California whereupon efforts failed culminated with Mayor Bob Ziegler declaring Unite Here Local 5 seeking injunctive relief against proposed plant closure January 1990 based on health concerns related primarily to chemical emissions resulting predominately affecting aquatic life thereby causing direct economic hardship to many menashians who relied upon jobs available offshore only two hundred miles away
