The museum is open to the public from 9am to 4pm Saturdays, and admission is free. On weekdays during school hours, the museum is open from 8:00am to 3:00pm. The first airguns were designed in 1892 by George Washington Hill, an American gunsmith living in England. Hill designed his own airgun using a six-chamber barrel with a multi-bullet magazine. In 1897, John Moses Browning developed the first modern airgun with a gas piston instead of an oil/fuel system. Browning's rifle was used in World War I as the primary firearm for fighter pilots. In 1924, Charles Winchester began sales of his new Model 1887 autoloader pistol using compressed gas cartridges. This pistol became known as the Winchester Model 94 (see below). Winchester soon migrated to electric firearms production and introduced his famous self-loading revolver, the Colt Python (see below), which fired single rounds through a metal tube called a “pump”. The Menasha Rifle and Pistol Club was founded on July 10, 1892. The club enjoyed success over the years in its ability to promote hunting and shooting opportunities in Menasha. In 1916, the club became a nonprofit organization with a mission to improve the quality of life for residents of Menasha by providing access to safe firearms education and firearm range use.
Menasha is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. Menasha is located in the northwestern corner of Cook County and is bordered to the east by Racine and to the west by Waukesha. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlers in Menasha were Dutch fur traders who arrived there in 1795. There are several theories as to why Menasha became known as "Mensahey". One theory suggests that because it was once a natural stop on the Fox River Navigation Company's (FRNC) route between Chicago and Milwaukee, Mensahey became known as a place where goods could be unloaded and stored before being transported further south. Many of the early buildings still stand today including the Town Hall, Post Office and School District Administration Building. In 1835, Menasha was one of seventeen townships organized into what would become Cook County. The name "Menasha" came from French La Mansaère which means "the Meadows". In 1836, a post office called Menasha was established at what is now its junction with Wisconsin Avenue (now State Street). At this time there were only two families living in Menasha- those of Indian descent and European descent- both of whom farmed their land around what is now State street. By 1880, however, three hundred residents lived in Menasha with about seventy businesses employing over one thousand people during that period alone; most notably agricultural produce dealers such as Hagedorn Bros., Butterfield & Sons and Smith Brothers Grain Merchants Limited; various lumberyards; meat packinghouses; wagon factories; foundries; breweries/distilleries etc.; all with ties to local transportation services essential for getting products from farm to market or vice versa
