In 1875, the first store was opened in Marshfield by John Waddell and his brother-in-law Levi Coffin with help from local merchants James Fenton and Isaac Noland. Over time more stores popped up throughout the town providing necessary goods and services for locals while also contributing to its growth rate. By 1900, Marshfield had become one of the most populous towns in Sheboygan County with a population of 3,500 people! In 1876, Marshfield became a city when it was annexed by Milwaukee. The city's first mayor was Moses Hirschfeldt. In 1909, Marshall Field married Lillian Waldorf (1863-1937), daughter of Edward J. Waldorf and his wife Alice Bancroft Kittredge. The couple had two daughters: NettieField Marshall (1920-2005) and Eleanor Roosevelt Marshall (1924-2011). They also had four sons: Harry S., Elliott D., John A., and Samuel H.: After Lillian's death in 1937, Field became increasingly involved with politics, serving first as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention from Wisconsin before moving on to serve as Ulysses S. Grant's secretary of state during Reconstruction in America before becoming Mayor of Chicago after their election there in 1898; he remains one of only two men ever to have held that office (the other being Franklin D. Roosevelt).
