Marshfield is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the far north side of the state. As of the 2010 census, its population was 11,935. The town was founded in 1836 by Captain Israel Marsh and his wife Anne Comstock Marsh and named for their father-in-law Colonel John Marsh. The original settlers were Quakers who had emigrated from England in the 17th century. Today's residents are mostly farmers with a small number of workers in various industries. The town is home to two schools: one public school and one private school. It also has a library, six churches, four grocery stores, three bars/restaurants, and a post office which opened on July 1, 1836. One significant event in Marshfield's history occurred on November 2nd 1865 when Union soldiers under General George Meade arrived to remove Confederate prisoners from Fort Randall which then became known as "Fort Douglas." Marshaltown (later renamed Prairie du Chien) was quickly developed as the new community and many businesses were established there including an insurance company which still exists today as AIG Marshfield Insurance Company LLC. The first settlers in Marshfield were farmers who arrived in 1835 from Fond du Lac. A post office was established in 1839 and named for John Marshal, one of the original settlers. The town site was surveyed in 1854 and organized as a village on October 20, 1855. The name of the town was changed to Marshfield on April 15, 1886 by an act of the Wisconsin State Assembly following the recommendations of a committee appointed to study local names. In 1893, a canal was begun through Marshfield and Sun Prairie to extend water supplies to those areas east of Green Bay. The town's first store opened in 1895. In 1913,Marshfield became home to what is now known as Waukesha County Technical College after its location within walking distance of many county seats across central Wisconsin made it an attractive location for that type of education institution. By 1933, however, Waukesha County had outgrown Marshfield so much that it decided to build its own school facility on land annexed from the small community east of Marshalltown instead. That same year saw also when marshall Field Boulevard (now Main Street)was completed linking downtown with nearby rural businesses and homes since then this strip has been utilized as corridors for events all around downtown Green Bay locations
