The first European to reach Marshfield was Captain John Smith on July 24, 1792 during his journey from North America to India. The village of Marshfield was organized in 1854 and named for Samuel W. A new post office called Marshfield (1901-1905) opened and remained in operation until 1978. In 1955, Mayor Thomas Jansen proposed that the word "Marsh" be replaced by "Oconomowoc." This proposal met stiff opposition within the community because many residents had grown up using the original spelling when they were children or adults; some even believed that "Oconomowoc" should remain unchanged because it represented local prosperity while "Marsh" represented poverty and hard work1973). Ultimately, however, Jansen's proposal won approval because it seemed like a more appropriate change for Oconomowoc County after years of growth in population and economic development throughout northwestern Wisconsin1974). In 1957–1959 several businesses moved into what would become known as downtown Marshfield which included Kiegels Department Store (now Macy's), Sears & Roebuck Co., Atchison Hardware Company (Now Home Depot), Bank One Building (Now PNC Bank), Ford dealership etc1975). Downtown business districts continue to this day although many changes have occurred since then includingthe construction of two new high school buildingsin 20061976). In 1990s there were various protests against planned cuts to state funding which led to increased police patrols downtown1977)

Marshfield was a town in Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,902 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Kenosha Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was organized in 1852 as a result of a merger of two other towns, White Earth and Marshfield Heights. The first post office was established in 1853. By 1920, however, industry began to decline and residential development took over; during this time period small businesses closed down and people left town for better opportunities elsewhere within America or abroad.
