It grew rapidly due to its location on the west bank of the Iron River and its access to transportation including a canal that connected the river to Lake Michigan. By 1960, Marshfield had a population of over 100 people and boasted several businesses such as a grocery store, insurance agency, and lumberyard. However, by 1990, Marshfield's population had decreased to about 30 people and its only business still open was the grocery store.
