Marshfield is a city in Dane County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 34,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Dane County. The first permanent settler in Marshfield was James Pierpont, who arrived in 1835. He founded the town of Pierpont on the east side of present-day Marshfield Lake. The town grew quickly and by 1854 it had a population of 790 people. In 1865, John Braidwood established the village of Braidwood on what is now eastern edge of Marshfield. In 1868, when Milwaukee and Wisconsin joined as one state,Marshfield became part of Milwaukee County and its boundaries changed slightly to include much of what is now eastern edge of Marshfield Lake. By 1890 most residents had left for other towns in Milwaukee County or within Illinois due to changing population patterns in that era. Only a few small businesses kept open until after World War I when many new homes were built throughout the area and industry resumed with a vengeance following World War II which brought more jobs to Marshfield and other nearby communities. In 1960 Marshall Fields opened its doors as one of America's first successful retail stores - an anchor store for nearly fifty years before being sold to Sears Roebuck in 1984; Sears closed its door permanently less than two years later (in 1987). Today Marshall Fields remains an important civic institution with over 1 million square feet (9300 m²) leased out annually across seventy-six locations across North America including twelve multi-site buildings located inside or near downtown Chicago; four multi-site buildings located outside Chicago within easy reach by car or train; three dozen site locations operated as "multisite warehouses" typically housing up to forty thousand square feet (24000 m²) each), all while maintaining their distinctive architecture and character unique among American retailers
