Marshfield is a town in Grant County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It was created in 1851 when the western half of the town of West Prairie was detached from the rest of Grant County. The first settlers were German immigrants who arrived during the early 1800s and founded a dairy farm near present day Marshfield. A post office was established there in 1853, and growth continued to be strong until the late 19th century when other local businesses took over most of the agricultural production. However, heavy industry began to arrive in Marshfield during this time with mills being built on Hawley Creek around 1900. This growth led to job loss for many families as new industries came into town and competition made it difficult for small businesses to keep up. In 1924, however, Congress passed the Smoot-Hawley Act which caused a wave of importation of inexpensive American goods which saved many small businesses from closure. By 1930, most manufacturing had stopped and government jobs had taken their place as major economic drivers in Marshfield. The last company still operating in Marshfield closed its doors in 1982 after decades serving local residents and tourists alike with its traditional ice cream cone service
Marshfield was first settled in 1837 by Reverend Meigs and his family. The town was named for Captain John Marsh, who had been a captain in the Wisconsin militia during the War of 1812. The population of Marshfield gradually grew until it reached its peak in 1890, when there were over 1,500 people living in the town. After a period of decline, Marshfield experienced a brief resurgence during the late 1990s and early 2000s as new businesses and residents relocated to the community. However, recent population growth has again stalled and recent development has focused on creating new homes and businesses within the town limits.
