Marshfield is a small town in the town of Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It lies on the north side of the river Arkansas and is bordered by Menominee County to the east and south, Racine County to the west and north, and Brown County to the northwest. The first settlers in Marshfield were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1634. The name "Marshfield" was derived from Manor farm which was located in what is now Racine County. In 1837, a post office named Marshfield was established at a site near present-day Menominee Falls. It was renamed for General John Buel (1781-1846), an American general during the Mexican–American War who served as commander of Fort Dearborn on Lake Michigan. In 1841, when Wisconsin became a state, Marshfield became part of Green Bay Township. In 1847 it incorporated as a village under corporate law and changed its name to Marshfield Village when it won election to become an unincorporated community subject only to township jurisdiction. On July 1, 1957 it again changed its name to Marshfield after becoming one of twenty communities within Racine County that joined with Milwaukee in forming Milwaukee City government effective January 1, 1958. On December 15th 1978 local voters passed a referendum authorizing annexation by Milwaukee of all but two square miles (10 km²) of marshland lying between Waukesha Avenue on the east side and I-94 on the west side of town limits; this area included much of present day Marshfield including parts of Menominee Falls and White Rock along with most or all current residential areas within their boundaries as well as some land adjoining those boundaries that had not yet been annexed by Milwaukee (present day Brown County). The final annexation took place on January 1st 1979 resulting in total population growth from 2% up to 9%. At that time there were over 20K residents living within city limits while less than 10% lived inside annexed borders prior to 1980! Today major portions – including most or all current residential areas – are still within city limits while smaller amounts are located outside them both inside and outside annexed boundaries

That same year, the first school opened in the town. In 1845, the town passed an ordinance repealing prohibition and establishing itself as a dry town. By 1860, Marshfield had a population of 350 people and two churches. The town's first store opened in 1865. On November 3rd of that year, Marshal Field became incorporated as a village with a population of 875 people. Over time, the village dwindled in size and eventually dissolved intoMarshfield at its current location on May 6th of this year.
