Marshfield is a town located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,719 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1848 and named for General James Marsh. The first white person to live in the town was Isaac Newton, who owned land next to the current town site. In 1852, the town was incorporated as it became stately enough to be done so by ordinance rather than by vote of its citizens. The original post office building still stands today on Main Street and is used as a library branch. The townsite that now makes up Marshfield was once inhabited by many different cultures including the Menominee people, Potawatomi Indians, Sauk people and Fox Creek Mission men. The Menominee people were hunters and gatherers who hunted Big Ten game such as deer, bear and moose. They also traded with other tribes during their time in Marshfield. One of their most important contributions to Marshfield were they built many homes which still stand today; one of which is called "Old Home Place". In 1847-1848 General James Marsh sailed his flagship USS Constitution from New York City bound for Oregon via Lake Michigan after helping free American slaves on this continent during the Mexican-American War (1846-1849). Heading into what would become known as Lake Michigan's "golden age", he discovered additional rich deposits of gold near Kalkaska River where he prospected until 1850 when he abandoned all claims due to overproduction from then new technologies such as cyanide mining that had replaced gold panning techniques centuries earlier! He remains one of only a few individuals ever honored with an entire city block dedicated solely to him outside of any major U.S city! His descendant lives in nearby Manitowoc County and continues operations out of Old Home Place today...the only remaining structure from his shipwrecking venture!
