The name of the town comes from Missoula, Montana Territory, which was named for French explorer Louis-Jacques Cartier. In 1856, a group of men and women from nearby Waukesha founded the Town of Marinette on land that had been surveyed by Captain George Caton in 1845. When Caton died in 1854, his group sold their interest in the town to fur traders and farmers who began to settle there. They built log cabins and Missouri gingerbread houses until they ran out of wood and moved onto larger homes around 1870. (The first post office was opened in 1857.) By 1902 the population hadgrown to 5,000 people when a company erected a machine shop on Main Street. A hotel called the Biltmore occured between 1912 and 1918; it burned down but was rebuilt with more modern features including an indoor pool and whirlpool tubs.). In 1965 a large fire destroyed most of the downtown businesses (the only building still standing is an old store on State Street). However, downtown again thrived when new businesses were constructed such as Sam’s Restaurant (now part of Applebees) and Western Furniture Store (). In 1984 Marinette established its own school district which became one of Wisconsin’s largest after changes in state government caused all school districts throughout Wisconsin to merge into one system two years later. As economic times changed in Marinette over time so too did social habits with more people moving away from farming towards services like healthcare or education although some stores such as Granny Smith continued to operate until 2003 due to local support
Marinette was one of the towns in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. It was founded in 1847 by Danish immigrants and named after Princess of Wales, Mariana of Spain. The town became a city in 1893.
