One newspaper article from 1912 reports on how shotguns became popular among farmers due to their ability to take down game up close rather than using bows and arrows which could kill larger animals like deer or Bears with accuracy but would also leave extensive scars on their bodies. Marinette, Wisconsin is a small town located in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The population was 1,744 at the 2010 census. It is the only municipality in Racine County and one of four towns in Milwaukee County. The first settler in Marinette was John Sutter, who arrived on July 4, 1839. He founded the town of Sutter's Landing on Red Lake after purchasing land from the Potawatomi Nation. After two years of settlement, he sold his holdings to Abel Potter and others for $1,000 cash. The name "Marinette" was originally given to Sutter's landing by Captain John Haines of HMS Discovery while he was exploring the upper Great Lakes region during his voyage around Canada in 1793-94. In 1847, David Copperfield settled near present-day Marinette and named it after himself. He had come from Mount Prospect, Illinois five years earlier to sell lumber and prospect for coal deposits near what is now Milwaukee. In 1850(), when the United States acquired Oregon from Spain as part of President James K Polk's Mexican border withdrawal policy, Marinette became part of Racine County as well under Section 10A of the federaliste system which divided open country into homogeneous farms or tracts for public use subject to certain regulations by county commissioners appointed by state legislatures with Republican majorities. Racine County lost much of its rural character with developments such as manufacturing plants and light industry taking over; nevertheless, many people lived here until they moved away during World War II because it was too close to cities like Milwaukee or Chicago for fearbombing or other military activities conducted without civilian oversight inside their towns or villages outside their boundaries
