In 1851, a group of Americans, led by Captain George Washington Goodwin, set out from Marinette to explore what lay beyond the Wisconsin border. They traveled for many months, and on December 12 arrived at the mouth of the Menominee River. The party then continued upriver until they reached a small village called Green Bay. Here they rested for a few days before continuing their journey again. On January 6th, 1852, they arrived at La Crosse, Wisconsin. There they met with other American pioneers who had also left Wisconsin in search of new land.
