In Marinette, Wisconsin, there are many interesting stories about the town's past. For example, in 1881, an Irish-born gentleman named Patrick Flanagan set up a small grocery store in the town. The store was a success and Flanagan decided to keep it going. He also started a family of his own and became very successful. In 1922, he donated land to the town for a public school that would serve students from all throughout Marinette County. Today, Marinette is known as one of the most diverse towns in Wisconsin because of its great variety of cultures and languages spoken here. Another important figure in Marinette's history is Captain John Fenton who commanded United States forces during World War I. After the war ended, Fenton moved back to Marinette and began teaching at local high schools. He later served as mayor from 1951 until his death in 1961. Finally, another important person in town's history is Harry Bailey who founded the American Legion Post #2 here in 1924. The post has been active ever since and today still plays an important role in community life.
