Marinette is a town in Marinette County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 4,715 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five towns in Marinette County. The first permanent settler in Marinette County was Wm. Post from New York City on October 14, 1853. He and his family camped near present day downtown Marinette for two weeks before moving to their current location on the east side of the creek where they built a cabin and started farming land which they later developed into a small town. In 1870, brothers George and Hiram Morse bought 640 acres (250 hectares) of what is now Marinette County from John Averill for $5 per acre ($140 total). They began developing this land into an agricultural area that would become known as "Morse Country". By 1880, they had accumulated over 1,200 acres (500 hectares) of crops and fruit trees with a sawmill and grist mill located on their property. In 1886-87 they leased 538 acres (220 hectares) from Gustavus Swenecke for $75 per year to establish a model railroad track through their property which became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Michigan during this time period. By 1890, Morse country had been divided into 10 sections with George Morse responsible for each section's development including: dairy farming (now part of Menomonee Falls), lumber production (now part of Milwaukee), fishing ("Blackmud Lake", now open to boating), coal mining (now part of Green Bay), wheat/ barley production (Now Racine), hog raising/ processing ("Goudreau Hall" later renamed "Greenfield"), general merchandise sales etc., all within walking distance or less than 2 hours by car or horseback ride from their homes in rural Marinette County On July 1st 1898 when Wisconsin passed its first General Statute making it an unconstitutional territory under the U.S Constitution prohibiting self-government by Native Americans led to passage by state legislators bills creating three townships within Marinette County - Town Of Kenosha, Town Of Whitewater & Town Of Manitou Springs - each with its own elected officials and governing regulations separate from those of neighboring townships such as Kenosha & Whitewater . The new municipalities were adopted without opposition but met resistance among some residents who felt that their township should have been included instead because it was adjacent to them geographically speaking . In 1914 when Marionettes annexed Kenosha & Whitewater ,the Township Of Manitou Springs withdrew from existence becoming simply "Marinette". On May 8, 1836, Marinette was born to a family of farmers in the town of Marinette, Wisconsin. For many years it was one of the most rural and agricultural towns in the United States. In 1851, when Wisconsin became a state, Marinette joined the other counties within that state. The town's population gradually grew until by 1910 it had reached over 10,000 residents. In 1912 the first school in Marinette was founded and soon afterwards an library and post office were opened as well. Due to its location on the border between two states and its small population size, Marinette often served as a stopping point for travelers on their way to or from Illinois or Michigan. When World War I began in 1914, Marinette found itself caught up in the conflict and saw combat several times; however, no military action took place within its borders. However, due to this engagement and related events which occurred throughout 1918-1919 (the war included several natural disasters such as severe flooding that struck northwestern Wisconsin), locals acquired nickname "The Green Berets" because of their participation in fighting during that time period.
