Jensen also played a significant role in early education within Marinette; he donated land for a school district that would eventually become Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS). In 1886, John Sauer opened his sawmills on Menomonee River east of town limits near modern day Whitefish Bayou . Marinette, Wisconsin was founded on November 3, 1836, by John C. Fremont and his wife Catharine Marsh. The town was named after Marinette County in Michigan where the Fremont family had a home before moving to Wisconsin. The first store in Marinette opened in 1839. In 1842, the first school in Marinette opened. In 1840, the first bridge over the Fox River was built.
