Marinette, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,814 at the 2010 census. The first known inhabitants of what is now Marinette were Menominee Indians who occupied the area from around 1800 to 1834. He named his new community after his sister-in-law's maiden name, Marjorie Crain (née Weston). In 1837, German immigrants founded a settlement called Kieler Berg which later became part of Marinette. In 1840, Dutch settlers arrived and named their community Nieuwendamme after their farmstead at New Holland Landing on the North Branch of streams that flow into Lake Michigan near today's city of Chicago Heights. In 1847, Italian immigrants settled nearby Racine and named their community Santa Lucia because its founders had encountered a Madonna statue dedicated to Saint Lucia during an pilgrimage to Rome as part of an extended family vacation there that year. It wasn't until 1889 when a group of farmers led by George Luedtke decided to move from Waukesha County into Manitowoc County because they felt they had been left out of decisions affecting local development by county officials in Waukesha County - issues such as prohibition taxes and railroad construction being particularly contentious at that time between residents within villages/towns along Wisconessee River valley while towns further upriver enjoyed comparatively privileged treatment due to riverfront access or lack thereof (the exceptions being Stevens Point where tidal flooding caused government intervention to protect its citizens from potential loss). Since 2000, however, there has been a slow but steady trend towards decline at both local level (due to increasing economic competition) and national level (due to changing demographics). This trend is most pronounced in Marinette's primary economic sector – education – where enrollment levels have declined significantly while job opportunities have shrunken overall. Despite these challenges, however, there is still considerable potential for growth within many facets of local life such as retail trade or professional services if government support is available.
On November 5, 1846, Marinette County was created from sections of Racine and Milwaukee Counties. The county was named for Princess Eugenie of Monaco.
