Marinette, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 2,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The community was founded by Danish immigrants in 1855 as a port on the Menominee River and became an agricultural center after being bought by the Galt family in 1882. In 1922, it became a city and has since grown to become one of the most agriculturally-active cities in the Midwest. The first settlers were Jens Hesselbauer and his wife Margrethe who came over from Denmark in 1855 along with their three children, Hans Christian (1857-1921), Elise (1859-1924) and Jens Peder Grammenfelt (1862-1941). They built a log cabin on what is now Park Drive near present day South Fourth Street – today's town square – and started farming around it using oxen and horses drawn teams. A year later they hired someone to help them with irrigation water from a well that they dug themselves. One of their daughters married Samuel Galt (1853-1920), one of the early investors in Milwaukee who owned land adjacent to what is now Marinette. In 1881, John Ditlevitz bought some land east of Marinette from Galt for $3,000 cash which he then donated to build a schoolhouse on top of which he erected an American flagpole to represent his new settlement. On July 4th, 1886, due to heavy rains that had pounded Cook County hard that week, part of Marinette flooded resulting in many homes getting ruined or destroyed but no loss whatsoever to property values within or outside town limits however much damage may have been done to infrastructure such as roadsides etc…..Marinette’s newest addition; its first grocery store opened its doors July 1st 1886 inside City Hall….On November 15th 1888; citizens voted 98% yes upon incorporation intoMilwaukee County when choice was given bylaws limiting voting only within city limits…..The first post office opened October 3rd 1890 at 415 N State St.(now First Avenue)….During World War I; local farmers mobilized for service throughWWI Drafting Board System……After WWI; several businesses closed including: jewelry store operated by Fanny Weigel & her husband George Weigel until 1919 when they moved out onto Wabash Ave.; lumberyard closed because of high prices for wood during prohibition years…………..For over 100 years various businesses have been located downtown near Third Street between Lake Michigan Boulevard/Wabash Ave…..Marinette’s main thoroughfare throughout all these years has been Third Street between lake Michigan Boulevard/Wabash Ave., often referred as Main Street even though numerous side streets branch off this main artery…………………………………………………………………………………Today Marinette contains approximately 20 restaurants offers more than 25 services including: banking, doctor offices, dentists office etc.; 5 public libraries including 2 public radio stations; 10 schools including 3 private schools; 8 parks including one full size Olympic sized park open year round with swim/bike lanes、hiking trails etc.; marble streetscape complete with sidewalks amd streetlights………………………………………
