Marinette, Wisconsin is a town in Green Bay County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 9,527 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Green Bay County after Grand Marais. Marinette was laid out as a town on December 12, 1857 by the Commissioners of Racine Township. On March 15, 1865, it became a city and was incorporated on July 1, 1867. The current name comes from Mount Vernon Place which had been donated by General James K. Polk to become home to American soldiers during World War I. The town of Marinette has a rich history dating back to its very beginning. In 1857, commissioners laid out what would become Marinette as a town on the north side of present-day downtown Green Bay due to concerns about potential flooding from nearby Thiensville Creek. Today’s downtown area was built on land that once housed two churches and other businesses before becoming residential property later in the century. In 1863, when Milwaukee had larger boundaries than Green Bay County at that time (it was only formed in 1837), Marinette became part of Milwaukee and continued to be governed by its own mayor and city council until 1903 when it merged into Green Bay City government under Mayor John Dromgoole Sr.. The merger never went through because Dromgoole felt that he could more effectively manage both cities with one set of rules and regulations. As an result of this merge-backward decision made by Dromgoole Jr., muchof what exists today within Marinette borders both Milwaukee and Green Bay City while also sharing some services such as water rates and waste disposal among all three municipalities due to their overlapping boundaries at the time of their incorporation into city government.
