Marinette is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the Waukesha River west of Milwaukee. The population was 23,819 at the 2010 census. The name "Marinette" is also used for a river located in western Wisconsin east of Milwaukee which flows through the town. The town originated as a stagecoach stop called Vernon Station on State Highway 45 (later US 441) between Waukesha and Racine counties in 1847. When US 441 was extended to Marinette in 1932, the town became part of the county seat of Racine County and its original courthouse still stands today on Main Street near its original store building (now an apartment complex). In 1923, whenWisconsin established school districts within each county, Marinette School District No. 1 was formed with land along present-day WI 42nd Avenue and Main Street within its boundaries. In 1927, when WI 42nd Avenue became I-94, Marinette School District No. 2 lost jurisdiction over that section of main street but retained jurisdiction over lands east of present day I-94; this area now includes much of what is now downtown Marinette as well as parts of Greenfield and Kenosha Counties to the north and south respectively In 1965, with organized housing available only to wealthy families in Milwaukee County, Marinette voters passed a resolution establishing their own Housing Authority which provided affordable housing for low income residents until 1968 In 1978 – just prior to Milwaukee's opening up to suburbanites – voters passed another resolution authorizing development within city limits adjacent to existing single family homes including those built before 1963 without Planning Board approval or special tax exemptions
In Marinette, Wisconsin, on July 3, 1851 a group of settlers arrived at the mouth of the Fox River. The town was founded by Captain John Fetterman and his wife Catherine. They named their new settlement after Marie-Antoinette, queen of France and sister to Louis XVI. The town grew rapidly and in 1858 it had a population of 350 people. In 1865 it became a city and in 1893 it merged with Racine to form Milwaukee.
