Manitowoc is located on the Fox River in eastern Wisconsin and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what would become Manitowoc County was Levi Price on February 14, 1837. Price homesteaded land that still stands today within what is now known as Price Park Community Unit No. 2B (or "Price's Corner"), which lies just east of downtown Manitowoc on Waupun Avenue and Walnut Street between East Washington Avenue and State Street. On July 8, 1839, James Hickey purchased 640 acres (25 km²) of northwestWisconsin territory from Potawatomi Chief Tecumseh for $200 (). The purchase included all present-day north-centralWisconsin including present-day Manitowoc County as well as parts of Racine and Delta counties to the south and east.. Hickey named his holdings "Hickey's Purchase" after himself.. In 1846, John Fritchie sold 1,000 acres (400 km²) to Peter Kapp for $250 (). This parcel extended from east along the Fox River to west along current day Milwaukee Avenue near Lake Michigan.. On January 6, 1850, Anthony Jorgeson bought 640 acres (25 km²) from Hickey for $75 (). It lay just northeast of downtown Manitowoc on what are now Trumbull Avenue and Superior Streets between Washington Boulevard and Water Street. Jorgeson developed this property into one of the most important commercial areas in town with several stores – principally a grocery store – opening up around 1860 until they were replaced by larger businesses such as Sears & Roebuck in 1892; Joe's Pizza starting around 1968; Chilton Tire starting around 1969; Golden Corral restaurant started serving breakfast tacos in 1978; Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery opened its taproom adjacent to Chilton Tire in 1984; United Fruit Company began production at their new fruit processing plant across from United Dairy Products headquarters in 1984; Appleton Brewing Company opened its brewery adjacent to United Fruit Company produce facility in fall 1990….. In 1886 when Milwaukee became an unincorporated community it had a population of about 150 people but by 1920 it had grown to over 5300 residents with over 100 businesses…In 1916 when Battle Creek merged into Milwaukee Township it lost some business properties but gained others such as Powers Hardware which served as the nucleus for Powers Supermarkets chain that exists today….. By 1980 there were more than 350 businesses operating out of 375 blocks square miles….Today there are only 25 blocks square miles remaining within Downtown Manitowoc limits making it one of America’s most shrinking cities while also being one of its most vibrant…The population density has decreased every year since 2000 except 2002 when it increased 2%. The loss or departure of many manufacturing jobs has caused Downtown Manitowoc’s once high level OF economic development potential to slowly shrink over time without ever reaching preindustrial levels….It should be noted that although Downtown wound down somewhat during this period we never stopped trading Main Street or our community spirit kept us going no matter how hard things got tough……Downtown has always been home to art galleries like Yin Yang Gallery which moved into their new space at 815 N American Ave in early 2016 followed shortly thereafter by Milk Studios which reopened their doors after a long hiatus last September……Nowadays you will find many food options available outside downtown if you feel like leaving Main Street behind…………….

A post office called "Wacom" was established in 1841; it changed its name to "Manitowoc" in 1851 after a local man who purchased land near Wacom Creek for $4 per acre ($160 per sq mi). The first store in what would become Manitowoc opened on October 15, 1853 by George Eastman at 22 John Street just north of Main Street (now Delafield Avenue).
