Manitowoc, Wisconsin is a town in the county of Milwaukee,Wisconsin, United States. The population was 21,601 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Milwaukee County after city of Milwaukee. Manitowoc is part of the Green Bay metropolitan area. The name "Manitowoc" means "army post on the Wabash River." The first settler in what became Manitowoc County was Nicholas Kapp who arrived in 1838. In 1839 he and his family built a log cabin near present day downtown Manitowoc on the west bank of the Wabash River. A year later they erected a small frame house known as Kapp's Cabin which served as their home until 1870 when they moved to a larger and more permanent structure which they named Mount Pleasant Village. In 1871, John Friesen established an agricultural commodities business called Prairie Farms at what is now south Main Street in downtown Manitowoc. This enterprise would become one of Wisconsin's largest farmers' markets and remain so until it merged with Packers World Corporation in 1998. In 1893, German immigrants George Kirchhoff and Friedrich Loeser founded Kirchhoff & Loeser Brewery on State Street just east of Market Square (now north First Street) in what became known as German Village or simply Gvh village (pronounced go-hin). This brewery would become one of America's most successful breweries with its flagship product being Wisconsin ale. After Kirchhoff & Loeser died in 1917 their son Fritz founded Gvh Brewing Company Ltd., also located on State Street that continued production until 1986 when it reopened as Anheuser Busch Brewery USA Inc.. Today Gvh Brewing Company operates as an independent brewery under license from AnheuserBusch InBev NV.. During World War II many local companies collaborated to produce munitions for the war effort including Hula Coopersmith which produced Hawaiianian cattle feeders for military use; Seamans Paper Mill which made paper bags for military use; Soo Line Light Truck Manufacturing Corporation which manufactured trucks used by ammunition transporter units stationed all over Europe; and Maytag Electronics Corporation who manufactured radios, TV sets,Stereo systems and other electronics products during this time period After World War II many businesses closed but others such as Maytag Electronics Corporation continued to operate thanks largely to government contracts resulting from American victory over Japan during World War II.Today most aspects of local manufacturing have fallen victim to globalization however there are some exceptions such as Hula Coopersmith who continue producing Hawaiiian cattle feeders for military use while Soo Line Light Truck Manufacturing Corporation continues manufacturing trucks used by ammunition transporter units stationed all over Europe .
