Manitowoc is a town in the extreme northwest corner of Wisconsin, United States. The population was 5,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kewaunee County government. The Town of Manitowoc was organized in 1836 as a result of land grants from The Government of Canada. In 1847 it became an incorporated village under the name Manitowoc. On July 1, 1871, it became a town when all remaining unincorporated portions joined it as one unit. The first post office in Manitowoc opened in 1839 and closed in 1865. The current post office building was built in 1904 and dedicated by Mayor John J. Sutphen. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of census year 2000, there were 4,054 people, 1,693 households, and 903 families residing in the town. The population density was 701 everyone per square mile (269/km²). There were 2,069 housing units at an average density of 283 per square mile (130/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 96% White African American or African American descent; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% Pacific Islander; 0% from other races; and 2% from two or more races
There is no definitive answer to this question, as the history of gun swivels goes back many years. Manitowoc, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin, located on the southern shore of Lake Michigan. The population was 9,746 at the 2010 census[2] and 11,022 according to the 2016 estimate.[3] It is part of the Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis metropolitan area. The first white people to live in what is now Manitowoc were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1643 as part of the Great Lakes Colonization Expedition. In 1836, when Minnesota became a territory, Manitowoc was made a part of that state. In 1843, John Fetterman bought 613 acres (256 ha) east of present-day downtown Manitowoc from Solomon Cottage for $5 per acre ($24 per km²).[4][5] He began to build a sawmill on his property which he named Fetterman Falls after himself and his father-in-law William Fetterman Sr., both natives of New York City. The mill continued to be operated until 1906 by his son John G. Fetterman and grandson George Wirthlin Jr.—the last family still operating it today. The millstones that power the current mill are brought down by boat every year and transported overland 100 miles (160 km) to their final destination in Racine County about 8 miles (12 km) south of town on State Highway 1021.[6] In 1851, Chauncey Mifflin built a store/granger's house at 127 N Main Street which served as the first post office in Manitowoc County[7]. A new county courthouse was built between 1850 and1853; it burned down in 1893. The courthouse Annex building now houses local government services such as firefighting and law enforcement.[8][9] One side product from Mifflin's store business was Hawkeye Brewery,[10][11]: founded by German immigrant Adam Weiser with help from fellow German entrepreneurs Rudolph Buschmann and Martin Lagerfeldt on July 5, 1847,[12]: which became one of Wisconsin's largest breweries;[13]: Today it operates as an agricultural company known as LaCrosse Beer Company Incorporated
The town of Manitowoc was founded in 1836 by John and Elizabeth Chappel. The town grew rapidly due to the railroad, and by the early 1900s it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1938, the town became a city.
