Manitowoc, Wisconsin is a town located in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Milwaukee–Waukesha–Edison Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1853 and named for George Washington Manitowoc, an American politician and member of the United States Senate from Michigan. The first settler in Manitowoc was John Sutter, who built a cabin on the south side of Lake Michigan in 1853. In 1854, James Fenton bought land east of Manitowoc and began to build a house and farmstead called Fox Point. In 1856, Fenton's son Amos erected a post office at his farmstead which became known as Manitowoc Station. The name "Manitowoc" was derived from Manuwičká (pronounced man-tuh-wahk-uh), meaning "the place where two rivers meet." In 1857, Hermann Neuman established a blacksmith shop and wagon factory near what would become downtown Manitowoc. He also started to sell plows and other agricultural equipment out of his storeroom window for $1 per piece. By 1860, Neuman had developed a successful business that employed many people in the early stages of village development. In 1861, Isaac Pabst purchased some land north of downtown from defendant David Jenssen for $10 per acre ($2 per square mile). Pabst planned to develop it into an agricultural center with mills and stores able to produce goods for local consumers. However, because Pabst lacked capital to start these projects alone, he enlisted help from fellow entrepreneur Nicholas Merrill Sr., who had money available but wanted to invest it more cautiously until he could assess the potential risks involved with such ambitious venturesmanship Pabst's group built three small dams on Whitefish Creek – one near modern day West Allis while another two were created downstream at Signal Hill – giving them enough water power to irrigate upto 6 acres (2 hectares) of farmland each with wheat or corn when they finally completed their dam project in 1865 under the auspices of the Illinois River Company Limited Partnership (IRTPLP). In 1835, the first white men set eyes on the area that is now Manitowoc County. The area was part of the Menominee Nation at the time and they were exploring a possible route to Chicago. One of their leaders, James White, made contact with a man named Nicholas Merrill in 1836 and obtained land from him. Merrill's grandson, John Cushing, donated land to the town of Manitowoc in 1851. It was officially incorporated as a town on November 3, 1857. The city hall and school were built in 1865. Manitowoc experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to Lake Michigan and its military production capabilities. In 1948, it became an official U.S. city
