In 1851, gold was discovered at Golden Valley and quickly becoming an important center for mining operations in Northwestern Wisconsin due to its rich vein of earthstone deposits that included copperas well as silver and lead ore under high pressure from surface processes within very thin shale formations that also yielded coalbed methane gas reserves estimated at up to 20 million barrels (). As development around Golden Valley quickened with thousands more miners arriving during these years (), many families decided to move away from what would become their only opportunity for employment outside their homes (). Today much remains unchanged about this pioneer period such as several blocks of downtown buildings dating back to those days including the old United States Post Office which still serves as an advertising billboard featuring vintage photos taken during that time In 1867,. David Sacket purchased some property northwest of present day Manitowoc which formed what would eventually be known as Sackets Park. Here he started developing his additional holdings which included today's shopping areas northeast of downtown along US 349/FX roads () also including Waukesha County Airport (). By 1870., Sacket's business district extending northward from his park had grown into what is now known Downtown Manitowoc (). Over time various other businesses followed suit until by 1920., most notably J & L Donuts (), Sears Roebuck & Co Merryland Department Store (), Best Western Inn () and then Harry's Coffee House ()dominated this commercial core (). The growth pains associated with World War I (1914-1918) slowed but did not stop occupancy rates (+10%) or business expansion (+50%) even though prices for goods rose 50% above 1921 levels due To wartime inflation however all major stores reopened before New Year's Day 1919 (). Most notable among these renaissance merchants were Rube Goldberg inventor Ernest Hemingway who opened his own cafe inside Best Western Inn (); Prohibition began following World War I and although drinking alcohol became illegal statewide on January 1st 1925 (), grocery store shelves continued stocking beer until 1933 when prohibition ended effective July 1st )) After 30 years anchored by two large department stores Main Street gradually lost some retail jobs typical during earlier decades; however many older buildings remain standing downtown indicative of continuing economic vitality despite current challenges posed by demographic change
