In 1898, Wisconsin passed an act creating the National Rifle Association which helped keep firearms illegal in most states at that time. The Milwaukee Road passed through Manitowoc and other towns in what is now Manitowoc County until its completion by Rochester andMilwaukee Railroad Companies in 1854; this line became known as "the old Milwaukee Road." The first post office at Manitowoc was established on July 14, 1836, by George Jones.[1] In 1840, John Czarnecki built a sawmill and store near present-day First National Bank building. His millstream name honors him (Czarnecki). In 1865, David Sarnoff bought land north of town from Amos Kendall for $5 per acre ($140 per square mile). He erected an industries complex that included a flourery, meatpacking house and chemical works[2]. Sarnoff's company manufactured sugar beets for Waukesha County sugar refineries before World War I; he also exported them to Russia[3]. His plant closed during World War II but left behind an iconic landmark: Sarnoff Tower which still stands today as one of downtown Manitowoc's most popular tourist attractions. In 1955,[4] the United States Post Office moved from Green Bay to Manitowoc after being displaced by Interstate 94 traffic restrictions on State Highway 12W (now US Highways 169 & 77). At that time, only rural areas had mail service with little or no intercourse with larger urban areas; Express Mail continued to serve rural residents until 1985 when it merged into US Postal Service.[5] In 1957,[6] Stanley Rosenblatt opened his first general store at 401 E Main Street in what is now downtown Manitowoc[7], followed soon afterwards by Harry's Carpet Store at 451 Main Street[8]. Rosenblatt served as president of American Radio Relay League from 1951-1957. The first European to settle in the area now known as Manitowoc County was Jean Nicolet, a French explorer and fur trader. He founded the village of La Pointe on the current site of Manitowoc in 1743. The town was renamed Manitowoc in 1834 after Captain John A. Manning, who explored and surveyed the Wisconsin Territory.
