Manitowoc is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. Manitowoc is located on the Fox River and includes portions of Door County and Racine County. The first Europeans to visit what is now Manitowoc were French missionaries in 1642-1643 who named it "Miamisico". Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette visited by way of Green Bay in 1679, and recorded that he saw "a great body of people" living near the river where present-day Manitowoc stands. He also noted that their dwellings were built on piles driven into the earth, which he likened to houses made out of logs build on stilts. One such pile still remains today at North Avenue and West Third Street in downtown Manitowoc; it was used as a dump for local garbage until 1978 when it was given to the town for use as an open space. In 1854, John C Harper established a small grist mill here on his farm called Harper's Mill; it became one of Wisconsin's largest flour mills along with those in Madison, WI., Appleton, WI., Waukesha, WI., Racine, WI., Milwaukee, WI., Duluth MN/WI/IL and Superior MN/WI./IL). In 1875 Captain George Armstrong founded Armstrong's Landing opposite modern day downtown Manitowoc using craftsmanship from his father’s timber shipbuilding business ashore at Menomonee Falls; this landing served as a point or embarkation point for shipping goods upriver to Superior (now Milwaukee) during its early years as a portage stop on the Great Lakes region trade route network.. In 1881 Lieutenant Colonel Edward Everett Ellsworth erected a large white frame house called "The Ellsworth House" four miles east of downtown Manitowoc on land donated by Mrs. Higginson; this house later served as home headquarters for both United States Senator Joseph McCarthy (D-Wis.) during 1950s McCarthy hearings and later also served as office building for then State Superintendent Amos Alonzo Stouffer (R-Wis.). On October 15th 1888 Captain George Armstrong sailed his vessel The Grassy Knoll downriver from Superior under cover of darkness underOperation Highjump - an unprecedented expedition sponsored by President James K Polk - to explore natural resources underlying various areas within today’s Wisconsin including what are now known as Menomonee Falls National Wildlife Refuge & Brown County National Forest near Whitefish Bayou & Loon Lake...the objective being to assess whether any valuable mineral deposits could be discovered within these regions...Captain Armstrong returned safely with basketsful of coal and lumber from underground mines located in what are now Black Earth Township (& adjacent townships), Driftless Hills Township (& adjacent townships), and parts unknown today...this event represented significant technological advancement within our nation’s history & helped lay the foundation for world wide mining operations during this era....Today many residents still refer to this historic event which took place over 100 years ago when they stroll through downtown “The Grist Mill District” . . . . . On May 23rd 1889 Captain George Armstrong again explored new ground when he set off downriver from Superior under cover of night aboard his vessel The Grassy Knoll against prevailing westerly winds towards what is now Menomonee Falls National Wildlife Refuge (& Brown County National Forest)...Captain Armstrong sighted land undiscovered before reaching shore about 4 miles due westward along Sturgeon Creek...This uneventful voyage resulted in valuable information regarding offshore oil reserves which would eventually lead to development around Menomonee Falls....today much daylight exploration takes place beneath water while nightime exploration occurs above water utilizing sonar technology all while safeguarding sensitive environmental resources located within this watershed

In 1847, Manitowoc became the seat of Wiscona County and was incorporated as a village. In 1870, Manitowoc became the county seat of Wiscona County and continued to be so until 1931. It is now part of Racine County. The first school in Manitowoc was built on the corner of State Street and Washington Avenue in 1849. The first post office opened in 1851. The first store was built in 1854 and the first mill was built in 1865. In 1870, Manitowoc lost its status as a village when it merged with Racine into one municipality which continued to be called Manitowoc until 1931. In that year, it lost its status as a county seat when Wiscona County merged with Lake County to form Wisconsin Rapids Township (now Waukesha).
