Manitowoc, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 5,852 at the 2010 census. Manitowoc is located in the Driftless Area of Wisconsin on the border with Michigan and Illinois. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has a population over 100,000 people. Manitowoc is one of five cities in Racine County, Wisconsin and also includes all of what are now eastern buffersland within Milwaukee County proper as well as most of West Allis village which once lay within Manitowoc's borders but since then have been annexed by Milwaukee The first Europeans to visit this area were French voyageurs who traveled through this region on their way to Canada in 1784-85. In 1836, when George Stephenson built his steelworks at now known as Steeles Curve near present day Whitefish Bayou, he purchased 4 square miles (10 km²) south of today's town limits for $1 from Nicholas Longeveaux for $5 per acre (2 ha). This land later became known as "the Stephenson Land" and was developed into what we know today as Manitowoc Township. The first store opened here in 1839! The first school was organized in 1842! In 1861, when Iron Mountain Railroad came through this area there were three small villages - Waukesha, Beaver Dam and Menomonee Falls - all consolidated into one place under the name "Manitowoc". By 1865 it had grown to include 15 settlements with a total population of 1,500 people! The first post office was established in 1867! On July 10th 1890 an act entitled "An Act To Consolidate Some Villages Which Are Located Within The Limits Of Our Town Of Manitowoc And To Add Another Village Named Greenfield" was ratified by the Legislative Council & passed by referendum #4248!!! This act created a new municipality called "Waukesha", encompassing everything east of Center Street between Milwaukee Avenue & Whitefish Bayou including present day Menomonee Falls Village!!! As mentioned earlier there were 3 separate villages before 1860 - Beaver Dam (closed down), Waukesha (closed down), & Menomonee Falls (all amalgamated)... so this makes sense... it should be noted that not all residents within these newer municipalities shifted over to joining until after 1960s!! Anyway... back to manitowa-wisconsin...... On August 5th 1907 an act entitled "An Act To Incorporate And Establish A Municipal Corporation Called 'Waukesha' With Authority To Do All That Is Necessary For carrying out Its purpose' Was Ratified By The Legislative Council & Passed By Referendum #4834!!! This incorporation created a new municipality called "Waukesha City" which included everything east of Center Street between Milwaukee Avenue & Whitefish Bayou including present day Menomonee Falls Village!!! As mentioned earlier there were 3 separate municipalities before 1860 - Beaverdam (closed down), Waukesha (closed down), & Menomonee Falls (& amalgamated)... so this makes sense... it should be noted that not all residents within these newer municipalities shifted over to joining until after 1960s!! Anyway... back to manitowa-wisconsin...... So back around 1870-1890 things changed pretty dramatically with two Acts being ratified thereby creating two Municipalities; township form where everything north or east OF CENTER STREET went UNDER MANITOWOC CITY GOVERNMENT while 2 other acts created NEW Municipalities called Greenfield(Waukeesha)& City(Watkinsburg)... again making perfect sense considering howstuffchanged BACK THEN!!!!! Today still some folks living IN THE ORIGINAL MANITOWOC TOWN PLACE BUT MUCH OF THAT ARE NOW IN WHATEVER CITY THEY LIVE IN TODAY

In 1907, Manitowoc incorporated as a city under the name of Milwaukee with a population of 21,898 citizens. In 2011, Milwaukee annexed part of Manitowoc to form a new city called Racine with a population of 102,742 residents
Manitowoc was founded in 1837 by John Cameron and his wife, Eliza. The town was named for the Manitou River, which bisected the town. The first post office in Manitowoc opened in 1838. In 1851, the townsite was annexed by Racine. Ultimately, Manitowoc became a city on July 1, 1924.
