Manitowoc, Wisconsin is a small town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Manitowoc County and home to the University of Wisconsin–Madison campus. The name "Manitowoc" was first applied to what is now Manitowoc County by early European settlers in 1825 when they discovered a body of water called Menominee Creek in that area. The first permanent white settler in what is now Manitowoc County was Nicholas Merrill, who arrived on July 4, 1824, as part of the Lewis and Clark Expedition under Captains George russel and David Thompson. Merrill's party traveled upriver from Green Bay to Lake Michigan and back before landing at Fort Snelling on August 8, 1824. In 1830, John Prentice moved from Milwaukee to join Merrill and started trading with Native Americans along the Menominee River near present-day Waukesha County. In 1835, fur trader Samuel Morse bought land at what is now Manitowoc Falls for $1 million dollars which he donated to the local school district. He also built a sawmill there which became one of the largest in town until it closed in 1961; WMH-TV reported that “the mill” still stands today but has been converted into apartments since its heyday). Morse's donation helped spur development around town including several stores and a Masonic lodge (now known as First United Methodist Church) erected on his property just north of downtown; construction began on this structure in 1839 soon after Morse's death not long after he had given away all his remaining interests in the mill complex.) In 1840, Judge Augustus Herron built an inn near where Western Union Telegraph Company wires were laid down linking Chicago with St Paul via Rockford during what would become known as America's Great Lakes Region—an event considered significant because it marked territorial boundaries defined by watersheds rather than by river systems or other physical features.—of course there wasn't really any region then!—Herron later sold most or all of his land holdings hereabouts for $10 million dollars making him one of America's wealthiest men at that time; though some say he may have actually lost more than that through speculative ventures (he mortgaged his entire estate several times!).—Some notable people associated with Manitowoc during this time include Jens Hansen (founder/owner/operator of Hansen Bros., now JBL Brewery), banker Solomon Leibowitz (Leibowitz Trust Company), Alfred Kinsey (American psychologist who developed sexual behavior scales), inventor Nikola Tesla (who invented alternating current power transmission technology), photographer Julius Schwarzwald & Sons LLP], politician Art Schmidtke ([email protected]), author Will Durant (),[url=https://www2a2a2a1ddcfe3d4f9b4d8c6bdb7cd5fa] Howard Zinn[/url]]. The city limits were set miles below present day downtown so much so that today some streets lack even names but are still named for initial settlers: North Main Street southbound traffic goes past Present Day Downtown stoplight street eastbound goes past Warehouse Road stoplight street westbound goes past White Sands Boulevard stoplight street !!!!!!!!!!!!! The first store in the town was built by James Fenton and his wife, Martha. In 1840, John Dillard opened a grocery store on State Street. In 1851, the village of Manitowoc was organized and began to grow. A railroad was built through the town in 1854 and it became an important transportation center. In 1865, Manitowoc became a city and remained so until 1975 when it merged with Waukegan into the current city of Chicago.
