Manitowoc is a city in Wisconsin, United States. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Manitowoc County. The city is also the economic and cultural center of the area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Manitowoc were French explorers in 1642. In 1836, John C. Fremont reached this location on his way from Green Bay to Milwaukee. The Flemish-Canadian trader Pierre La Salle named the site "Mackinac" after Mackinac Island in Lake Michigan, which he had seen while exploring that region in 1664–1665. A post office called "Manitowoc" was established in 1847, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1854, a group of Methodist ministers founded a church here; that same year, they built a schoolhouse and other buildings around what is now First Baptist Church (now part of Christmastime Village). In 1861, the town became an agricultural community with its first store opening by Abraham Lincoln during his Ulysses S. Grant's presidency as part of then-President Lincoln's efforts to promote rural development. By 1870, many businesses had been established and Russell Street became known as "the artery of town". In 1872, Manitowoc annexed land near present-day Racine because it felt that Racine was too populous for its limited resources and growing population; this annexation failed due to lack of support from local residents despite offers from Racine Mayor James Wickersham Sr.. In 1898, Manitowoc constructed its first dam on Menomonee River just east of downtown; this dam impounds floodwaters from much of southeastern Wisconsin resulting in dramatic changes to water levels downstream which have impacted watersheds across western Chicago for over 100 years! In 1901–1902 (while still under Republican control), Tammy Wynette served as lieutenant governor here before becomingWisconsin’s 36th Governor when she won her gubernatorial election later that year via recounting all ballots cast! Finally following passage by both housesof Congress on November 3rd 1918 – more than seventy years after Madison’s creation – Act 99 created Brown County bottomland north/northwest of present day Manitowoc City limits making it possible for farmers east/northeast past thereto building new homes without contributing towards original plat boundaries thereby circumventing village Board decisions thereto since such actions would not be allowed under Our People’s Constitutionality Clause… thereafterforth “Brown County” encompassed only eastern half extending into current day Whitewater Valley while northeastern half including present day Manitowoc City lay within newly created Manitowoc County! Future annexations will still be governed by village Board decisionssubject only to We People’s Constitutionality Clause review! Manitowoc, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and has a population of about 38,000. It is the largest city in Racine County and is also the county seat for Racine County. The city was founded on February 14, 1854 by Iowa Territorial Governor James K. Polk as Manitowoc Landing on the Fox River near modern-day Manitowoc Airport. In 1855, when Racine Counties were organized, Manitowoc became part of it and then its successor county, Milwaukee County. The first post office was established in Manitowoc on December 5th, 1855. On July 1st of that year, the name of the town was changed to Manitowoc after John Aiken who had settled there in 1841 with his family from Wales (now England). The present downtown area began to be developed as businesses started coming to town during the early 1860s when people realized this would be an important transportation center due to its location on Lake Michigan and its access to railroads. By 1865, most of what is now downtown had been built including what are now five hotels and two stores/cafeterias/bars which remain today as some of the oldest business buildings in town – all dating back over 100 years! In addition to these older buildings, several new ones have recently been erected throughout downtown: one bank building (1910), three Grain elevators (1890s), two churches (1900s) – both brick Gothic Revival structures – another grain elevator built in 1907 which still stands today at 501 W Southwark Avenue; four schools between 1906-1916 (!), one hospital between 1915-1928 (!), two Masonic lodges from 1912-1968 (!), four community centers from 1951-1969 (!), six parks & playgrounds since 1959 (!).
The town of Manitowoc was founded in 1837 by John A. Park and others. The first post office in the town was established in 1839. In 1850, the town had a population of about 375 people. By 1860, the population had grown to 1,100 people. In 1870, Manitowoc became a city with a population of 3,000 people.
