Madison, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Dane County. The population was estimated to be 765,951 as of July 2017, making it the third-largest city in Wisconsin after Milwaukee and Chicago. Madison also occupies much of the former town of Green Bay within Dane county. The first European settlers in what is now Madison were French traders and explorers who arrived in 1642 during theWisconsin Valley Expedition under Lieutenant Colonel George Crooks. settled on land that would become Dane County and named it for François de La Vallée, Sieur de La Fayette, a French general who had fought against Spanish forces at Tippecanoe Hill during the American Revolutionary War.
