He named this stream after General Macklinac who had died two years earlier while fighting with forces under Ross Ford at Yorktown Heights during the Mexican War (1846-48). It was not until 1840 when Pierre Ferland discovered a fur trading post on Macklinac Island and offered goods for sale at cost to Native Americans when he went ashore there with his men to explore Lake Michigan shoreline beyond our current day Iron Range region east of Milwaukee; thus beginning American Fur Trade activity in this area. In 1845 Peter Costigan built a log cabin on what is now Monroe Street within sight of today's United States Capitol complex as part as first permanent settler in what would become known as Madison Township (now Dane County). In one year over 60 dwellings were erected throughout township by early colonists including Costigan and others who made up early civic leadership including Selectman David Wilkinstrom; likely influenced by similar structures built by other English Settlers along much later same Ohio River valley settlements such as Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky etc., becoming America’s first townsite westward o
