Little Chute is a small, rural community in the town of Vernon, Wisconsin. The population was 1,868 at the 2000 census. It is located about 20 miles east of Milwaukee and 30 miles north of Green Bay. The community began as a post office on February 14, 1854, and became incorporated as a village on November 3, 1875. It was named for Congressman Thaddeus Little (1792-1878). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,868 people living in 693 households out of which 33% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46% were married couples living together, 12% had a female householder with no husband present, and 42% were non-families. 35% of all households were made up of individuals and 10% had someone from another family; 5% had someone from outside the family. Little Chute is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and is part of the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The population was 8,829 at the 2010 census. Little Chute was platted in 1847 by Captain John Fetterman, one of the first white settlers in what would become Milwaukee County. Fetterman named his community after Mile Chute, a small stream on which he had farm property located nearpresent-day Delafield. In 1855, Fetterman's son and successor as captain of the First Milwaukie Volunteer Fire Company, Amos Fetterman donated land to form what is now Main Street in Little Chute. The town name may be derived from either mile or chute (a small stream). The first post office was established at LittleChute on January 3, 1850. The current post office building was built in 1907 and remains standing today as one of Little Chutes most iconic landmarks. One local legend has it that when President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address in 1863, he stopped for lunch nearLittleChute and orders a ham sandwich from a young girl working at an inn there - only to find out later that she had hidden food for him under her bed! In 1898, Littlestown opened up shop inside what is now Brown’s Hardware Store on North Main Street. This unique store offered books about all things Wisconsinan along with snacks such asWisconsin cheese puffs and Wiener schnitzel sandwiches! A few years later they added a grocery section complete with cold storage space to their store while also opening up their own bakery which still operates today called “LITTLE CHUTE GARAGE BAKERY”! In 1978 they started selling organic produce direct to consumers through their own website! Today they continue to serve healthy foods straight to your home through their website and Facebook page!
The first settlers of Little Chute, Wisconsin were John and Lydia Grimes in 1845. The Grimses built a log cabin on the east side of the river in what is now the town of Chute. They started farming, but their land was too far from the nearest post office to be profitable, so they moved to their present location in 1851. The first school in Little Chute was founded by Mrs. Rebecca Kapp in 1852.
