The Little Chute gun case company was founded in 1911 by J.F. Schmitt and his brother, Theodor. They made cases for shotguns, pistols, rifles and artillery pieces and exported them to many countries. In the 1920s they started making cases specifically for handguns and became one of the first companies to produce full-sized handguns in America. From the 1940s until the late 1990s they produced cases exclusively for Smith & Wesson revolvers.Until recently all their handgun cases were made of hardwood or plastic. However, recent interest in handguns has caused them to switch to a more traditional manufacturing process: tanned leather with a brass or nickel finish. One of the most famous Little Chute guns is probably that used in The Wizard of Oz by MGM Studios; it was manufactured by J&J Arms Company (now part of Remington) using a case designed by George Mathis as part of an advertising campaign sponsored by Winchester Ammunition Incorporated (then still based at Exeter, New Hampshire). This particular revolver case is now on display at thehibitium at Exeter University in New Hampshire where it has been on display since 1978 under the name “The Wizard’s Gun”

In 1951, whenLittleChuteseiver Township was established, it was one of only a few townships within Michigan designed specifically for miners and logging companies looking for cheap land near valuable minerals deposits. For years, this area consisted mostlyof low-lying swampy ground unfit for farming or habitation due to constant flooding from nearby rivers. But thankstothe hard work ethicof many early residents, by 1974 LittleChuteseiverTownship had become one of Michigan’s most prosperous communities with a healthy economy based on agriculture, manufacturing.,and service sectors including insurance and real estate development
