Little Chute is a small town in Racine County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 547 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1854 by John A. Hickey and his wife Judith Fenton. It is named for Little Chute Creek, which flows through the town. Little Chute is located on the east side of Racine Lake, about southeast of Milwaukee and southwest of Green Bay. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 473 people, 158 households, and 122 families residing in the town. The population density was 17 people per square mile (6/km²). There were 191 housing units at an average density of 10 per square mile (4/km²). Little Chute, Wisconsin is a small town in the lowerwestern part of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. It is located on the east side of the Kettle River, between Menomonee Falls and Hennepin County. The population was 2,567 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Little Chute was John Aitken in 1836. The town began to form around 1840 when settlers from Menomonee Falls and other towns near there formed a cooperative society to improve their water supplies. The name "Little Chute" was chosen because it was easier to pronounce than "Chute." The first store and post office were opened in Little Chute in 1848 by Major John Pugh and his wife Sarah Burchard Pugh. In 1854, James Fenton opened a grocery store in what is now known as the Fenton Block building on Main Street next to the Kettle River bridge. By 1860, several other stores had been established in Little Chute: David Wistar's Store (now called Wistar Branch), Solomon Sauer's Grocery (now called Sauer Bros., Inc.), Peter Seeger's Bank (now Seeger Bros., Inc.), Hennepin County Courthouse (now used as an apartment complex), and James Ewers' Furniture Store (now known as Home Goods Plus). On July 15, 1861, after Josephine Jorgenson surrendered at Fort Todd during American Civil War General George Armstrong Custer's attempt to cross the Kettle River into Canada, all men over 20 years of age were required to leave for three months or face military detention at Indian Point on Lake Superior. One hundred men from Little Chute had already left for Minnesota before July 15th; most likely they went willingly but some may have been taken against their will since they might have been accused of being spies or traitors if returned home without permission. At least one man died during this time period as a result of illness or hardship while being held at Indian Point: Lewis Payne died on July 15th due to fever contracted while incarcerated there. In 1865, local resident Isaac Hecox built a log cabin north of town on land which he donated to the community for use as a schoolhouse and library/ archives center that still stands today known as Hecox Library & Archives
In 1854, the first white settlement was made in Little Chute. The town began to grow rapidly after the opening of a sawmill and other businesses in 1857. In 1861, Little Chute became a village when it amalgamated with neighboring towns of Hubbard and Waukegan. The population reached 2,000 by 1871. In 1909, the village had grown to 4,000 residents and it became an official town in 1912. It lost its status as a village in 1974.
