The bows and arrows were then traded and bartered among the tribe members. The first town in Little Chute was founded in 1854 by John Wetherbee. Wetherbee was a gunsmith who manufactured cannons and rifles for the U.S military during the Civil War. He also built a mill which produced flour, feed, lumber, cottonseed oil, cheese, eggs and other goods for the townspeople. In 1872, a group of men from Midland County decided to form their own town in Little Chute. They named their new town after General George Armstrong Custer who had died in battle two years earlier while on his way to lead an army against Native Americans at Fort Robinson on the Missouri River. The men from Midland County donated land to build a city and named it after Custer. Little Chute remained an agricultural community until around 1920 when it became one of the major industrial towns in central Wisconsin due to its proximity to Lake Michigan and its natural resources such as coal, iron ore, paper products and automobiles. The population of Little Chute peaked at over 10,000 in 1950 but has since declined slightly due to suburbanization and loss of jobs in manufacturing sectors located outside of Little Chute

Little Chute is a town in Marathon County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay–West Allis metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1857 and named for a small creek that ran through it. The first settler in Little Chute was John Fenton, who arrived in 1857. He built a cabin on the east side of the creek. By 1860, there were 10 settlers living in Little Chute. In 1865, James Halsey settled about one mile to the south of Fenton and soon after started trading with Indians for goods they found on their trips into the woods north of town. In 1867, Luman Whetstone moved from Prairie du Chien to start Whetstone & Company mercantile store and post office at what is now known as State Road 12-A (now US Route 6). This store became one of several early businesses in Little Chute; others included Halsey's Store (1868), Smith's Drug Store (1869), and Rankin & Company undertaker business (1870). By 1870, Little Chute had a schoolhouse and two stores. A millinery shop also operated briefly around this time before becoming closed down by 1872 because of high costs associated with cloth production during the timescale when Little Chute was still within Indiana Territory under full Indian rule In 1871, Isaac Myers set up his own grocery store in what is now known as State Road 12-B just south ofState Road 12-A which became known as Main Street (). Myers stocked groceries offered by other merchants including Daniel Jorgensen at his general store across from Main Street (). In 1895, First National Bank opened its doors along Main Street (). It would be until 1953 when WI Commerceowned Big Muddy Railroad established trackage through town making transportation available to all residents without having to leave their homes (). At this time little else changed apart from an addition to Big Muddy Railroad station located next door on West Highway 50 ()
