Binoculars were first invented in 1785 by a man named Nicholas-Jacques Conte. The early binoculars were made of wood or cloth and had no lenses but they were very useful for viewing objects at a distance. In 1827, the British scientist John Herschel designed a pair of binoculars with lenses that could be brought close to your eye so you could see better. He called them “Herschel glasses.” By 1830, people all over the world were using Herschel glasses to view things at a distance. In 1840, French scientist Auger developed an improved form of the Herschel glasses which had two small lenses put into each side of the frame and these became known as Conte eyes. The first true binoculars were created in 1851 when German scientist Johann Engel invented what is now known as an Engel lens. These new binoculars featured large glass objectives with metal cups that allowed you to see clearly even when your eyes are tired from looking at distant objects. Little Chute, Wisconsin is a small town in the town of Dodge City, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. Little Chute is located on State Highway 151 north of Dodge City. The first settler in Little Chute was James McKinney in 1855. The first post office was established in 1856 and the first store was opened in 1857. The town name originated from a small stream that ran through it. A Presbyterian church was built there in 1868 and named after the creek's name. The first school was organized here in 1861 and the first teacher was Mrs. Henson. In 1865, a two-story log schoolhouse and building were erected here with funds raised by subscription from local farmers. In 1870, an addition to this school building were built which housed a library until 1915 when it burned down. In 1916, an addition to the west side of Main Street were built for use as a farmstead by George Willoughby Ritchie and his wife Nora Gillett Ritchie which remains today as part of the Old Main Historic District. This addition also includes 3 outbuildings including a garage/workshop/ barn/, 2 houses (the original house being replaced by another structure), and 1 stovepipe pole barn/. . . . This land became known as "Ritchie Farm" because George Willoughby Ritchie owned most of it along with other acreage around it which he donated to Dodge City for public use.. It should be noted that although Little Chute had its own post office from 1861 to 1915, all official documents related thereto are missing or no longer extant; however residents of Little Chute continued to send mail using their own personal addresses until 1959 when they started using First Union Mail service facility at 3rd & Broadway.. In 1955, one week after becoming an incorporated community under state law called "Dodge City", citizens voted unanimously to change their name to "Little Chute". This occurred due to confusion over what other communities had already taken similar names (eastern dodge city picked up "Wichita", western dodge city picked up "Chutesville", etc.). History would later note that this decision may have been made due to pressure from adjacent communities who felt they had been left behind since incorporation did not take place until after those others' towns had fully developed.. According to legend, Mayor Tom Coates once remarked during an election campaign rally: “I’m running against Ike Eisenhower but I can tell you one thing - we’re goingto win even if he does come into office – we’ll have done our homework! We know what we want – just look at our little town…. It would be tragic if we didn’t get what we wanted because everybody else has got some pretty good politician here - but I say let’s go ahead and give it to him! That way he knows where he stands!” After leaving office as mayor following his victory over incumbent Dwight Daley in 2006, Coates now leads the non-profit organization People for Community Development which provides leadership development opportunities for low income youth

Little Chute was first settled by the Sauk people in the early 1800s. The town was named for a small creek that ran through it. The first post office was established in 1837, and the first store opened in 1841. In 1865, Little Chute became a city.
