When the first firearms were invented in the late 18th century, they were used for hunting and warfare. One of these firearms was a rifle with a long barrel that could be fired by holding down the firing button for a brief period of time. This weapon was called a muzzleloader because it used a firearm known as a muzzle brake to help stop the bullet from hitting another person or animal. In 1776, American Revolutionary War veteran and Weaponsmith George Washington began using firearms in combat when he took part in an attack on British forces at Saratoga Springs, New York. With his pistols and rifles, Washington managed to achieve victory against the British troops. As technology evolved over time, so too did weapons used in warfare. In 1847, percussion cap guns became available which could be fired by striking two pieces of metal together with an explosive charge built into the gunpowder cartridge. This new type of weapon was called a revolver because it had two tolerance barrels which allowed different rounds to be shot at different speeds depending on how close they were to each other. As technology improved, so too did projectile velocity and accuracy when using handguns such as revolvers for target shooting and self-defense purposes. By 1890, all handgun ammunition had been made jacketed (completed with lead jacketing) which greatly increased its stopping power and accuracy when compared to unjacketed ammunition. The introduction of repeating pistols also helped improve projectile velocity and accuracy while making them more user friendly than earlier handguns. In 1935, light machineguns became available which could fire automatically through bolt action systems like those found on rifles today. These weapons quickly replaced rifles as the primary infantry arm during World War II due to their greater firepower and ability to penetrate armor plate along with their ability to fire multiple rounds per minute without reloading

On July 12, 1851, La Crosse was organized as a town in the county of Cass County by an act of the legislature. It was named for General Anthony La Crosse, who had arrived in the area in 1847 and helped to drive out the Sioux Indians. The first post office was established in La Crosse on October 1, 1851.
