DowntownLaCrosse became an important commercial center during the late 19th century with several banks and businesses existing throughout much of blocks between State Street/Fountain Square eastward (now North Water Street) until just south of Main Street when it merged into northward extending South Water Streets development which continued until about 1915 when streetcar lines linked everything together making downtown very small again apart from some business blocks on South Water Streets itself where streetcar tracks still run today
