La Crosse was founded on October 10, 1854 by George Armstrong Custer as a small trading post on the Fox River. The town grew quickly due to its location near what was then known as the "Great Lakes region" and its access to transportation and trade routes. In 1900, La Crosse became an incorporated village under the name of La Crosse City. The city changed its name to La Crosse in 1978 after it joined the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now La Crosse were French traders who established a fur trading post there in 1763. French traders soon abandoned their posts because of Indian attacks, but English fur traders began using La Crosse as their wintering ground for travel up Lake Superior and down into Illinois during the 18th century. By 1804, about 60 people lived in La Crosse; most of them farmers from Upper Canada who had followed British explorer John Colgan around this area when he explored these new lands during his famous Explorations of1804-05. In 1854, George Armstrong Custer's group of American soldiers led by General Winfield Scott fought against Native Americans at Battle Creek before reaching Chicago overland route on November 27 (the day after Thanksgiving). After reaching Chicago they traveled northwest along present-day Interstate 94 until they reached Marquette sod fields west of Fort Dearborn where they destroyed some cannons used by local Native Americans to defend themselves against American forces on December 13 (the day after Christmas).
