La Crosse, Wisconsin is a town in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of La Crosse County. The population was 14,615 at the 2010 census. La Crosse is located on the Foster River in eastern Wisconsin. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1847. It became a city in 1907 and remained so until it merged with Milwaukee in 1998. La Crosse is home to Northwestern University, which has its main campus near downtown, as well as other campuses across the city including Marquette University, Southeastern Michigan College and Green Bay Technical College. The name "La Crosse" likely comes from one of several early French words meaning "bridge over the Foster." One theory suggests that Captain Jean Baptiste Nicolas de la Roche discovered what later became La Crosse while exploring for fur traders in 1772-3 during his Tour du Northeastern America expedition; he named this place after his leader's hometown of L'Aigle (Bridge over the Foster). In 1847, David Rice purchased land on both sides of the river from Nicholas de la Roche and began building a house on what would become known as Rice's Prairie. The first permanent settler - John Fitch - arrived in October 1847 and built an additional two homes on land that he had bought from Fitch's father just upstream from present-day downtown La Crosse. When De Pere moved to Scranton, PA in 1851 and started trading with Native Americans near Chicago Lakeshore (now West Allis), he learned about rich deposits of coal at Pawtucket Falls northwest of Presque Isle and decided to establish himself there instead of farther upriver where mining might be difficult or dangerous to undertake without guarantee of water supplies or access to markets available downstream should those supplies run out... so De Pere built himself a small dam across Mud Creek east of today's downtown La Crosse so he could power his mills using power diverted from Pawtucket Falls... By 1865 much larger dams had been built along all but one side of Mud Creek; however, due to competition by railroads development around Pawtucket Falls stalled... [the] last major dam was constructed almost fifty years later when Don Mills Dam impounded Mud Creek northward between Racine and Kenosha counties... At its creation Don Mills Dam created Lake Michieres which now forms part of Milwaukee Harbor.... Today much property west of Center Street south into Kenosha County is still agricultural because water availability has not always been reliable enough for industrial use; however redevelopment plans are under way for many properties within city limits which would include heavy industry such as steelmaking and auto manufacturing Some native American groups who lived near these areas before white settlement have continued to live there including: Potawatomi Nation (near Waukesha), Chippewa Nation (near Racine) Kickapoo Tribe (southwest corner modern day Appleton), Sauk Nation (northwest corner modern day Oshkosh), Fox River Bandits (southwest corner present day Sheboygan) etc." According to United States Census Bureau figures released in 2000, 13%ofLaCrosse residents were foreign born 8%were dual citizen citizens/nationals i

After Iowa Territory was divided into two parts on November 3rd,1863 pursuant to US Indian Removal Act - part going to Dakota Territory and part going to Nebraska - Fremont's temporary capital became Rock Island which then became la crosse (the complete spelling being lost over time).Rock Island served as la crosse for eight years before being transferred back to Chicago on October 12th 1865 due partly to financial difficulties caused by post-Civil War Reconstruction policies favoring southern Democrats over northern Republicans In 1867 a group of businessmen led by Colonel Abram Lyon purchased land east of downtown from Canada for $30 an acre which they used primarily for agricultural purposes until their construction company could provide better transportation access through their newly acquired land located what is now south side streets between Third Street and Fourth Street In 1895/96 lumber magnate Andrew Carnegie donated $10 million towards building a model town called Northern Indiana off main street north of his factory at 5th & Loomis Streets that same year – within sight but not reachable by car This would eventually become one of America’s most important industrial towns with many famous companies such as General Electric headquartered here In 1907 David Sibley built what is now Glacier National Park adjacent property along North First Street between Highways 24 & 26 providing much needed open space for people and animals On January 10th 1908 president Theodore Roosevelt declared “La Crosse Is A Municipal Corporation” creating special powers for it including authority “To make all laws necessary for carrying out its functions both civil and criminal” As part of this power grab local officials decided that liquor sales should be allowed within city limits subjecting citizens who objected thereto immediately arrested Without trial or any warning whatsoever early 21st century residents still retain some degree memory or awareness about this early 20th century event
On July 20, 1836, La Crosse was founded by Nicholas-Jacques Le Moyne and his family. The town's first post office was established on December 1, 1830.
