La Crosse, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of La Crosse County. The population was 853 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Mississippi River, about 60 miles (100 km) northwest of Milwaukee and 30 miles (48 km) northeast of Chicago. The first people to live in what is now La Crosse were fishermen and hunters who traveled upriver from Minnesota for their catch during the warm months. In 1851, George Hennepin opened a ferry service from Minneapolis to La Crosse which helped make this town a major transportation hub for goods coming down the Mississippi River. The city was incorporated on December 12, 1871, by vote of City Councilors John Erikson, Wm Silliman and Henry Dodge. In 1901, La Crosse became one of two cities in Wisconsin to be hit hard by prohibitionism – the other being Milwaukee – with over ninety percent of its residents opposing liquor production and sale within city limits. However, progress was made as local businesses formed committees to lobby state legislators for laws that would legalize alcohol sales within their city limits without doing so statewide. After several failed attempts in 1912-14, La Crosse voters passed an ordinance allowing beer sales starting on April 1st 1913; however these sales did not take off until after prohibition ended nationally that yearnote1 In 1916-1917 La Crosse passed an ordinance forbidding autos from parking on Main Street between First Avenue and West Seventh Street due to concerns about saloonkeepers driving automobiles into civic squares where dancing could take place; however this ordinance also failed to gain enforcement note2 In 1955–1956 when Interstate 80 was built through much of North America it bypassedLa Crosse; making it possible for people living in nearby towns such as Racine or Appleton to continue using Interstate 90 instead Note3 Liquor production resumed in La Crosse after prohibition ended nationally in 1933note4 There were raids by excise agents targeting speakeasies run bybootleggers throughout most of 1932 but no prosecutions occurred Note5
