In 1865, Mayor John P.] Dickey led an effort which resulted inLa Crossee becoming an incorporated town with a population of around 100 people. This dramatic transformation was made possible because of financial support from Governor Abraham Lincoln and his successor Andrew Johnson. The city quickly emerged as one of central Wisconsin's leading economic areas and played an important role in both its community development and government function - it remains one of today's most vibrant First World Cities! : From its incorporation until 1966, little change took place withinLa Crossee City limits other than name changes (e.g., from 'The Townsite' to 'City'). However during that time period significant growth occurred within neighboring Racine County; racinewaterfront properties became industrial zones while downtown lost much of its retail character resulting in a realignment of downtown business districts center/westward across I-94 along Park Drive; eastward along Third Street once again increased concentrations occurred among warehouse/handling institutions while northward along Main Street saw more concentration among university students
