La Crosse is located on the east side of the Mississippi River, just north of Milwaukee and south of Green Bay. The first European to visit La Crosse was Father Jacques Marquette in 1673; he journeyed upriver from present-day Chicago to find bisected rivers joining near his Location de la Grande Riviere (present day North Branch) and Lafarge Point (now part of Whitefish Lake). Marquette named the site "Lacrosse" after a small village in Normandy where he had been born some years before his trip. A French trading post and fur-trading settlement called Fort Dearborn was established about 1763 by Pontiac's troops under command of Sieur de Montmorency during their drive out British forces from Canada during the Seven Years' War. In 1839, La Crosse became an incorporated town when it amalgamated with neighboring Whitewater Township to form Dane County. The population peaked at over 10,000 in 1920 but has declined steadily since then; today it stands at 3,512 according to the 2010 census
On July 25, 1851, La Crosse was founded as a log town by lumberjacks and farmers. The first post office was established in 1852. In 1870, the city of La Crosse became the county seat and grew rapidly with the arrival of new settlers. The city government was abolished in 1903 and the county seat moved to Milwaukee.
