In 1847, a group of Milwaukee businessmen organized what became known as the Great Western Railroad to create transportation links between Milwaukee and Chicago through what is now Kenosha County. The town got its start when two brothersfounded a store and hotel in 1854 called the Hotel Racine which became one of the most successful businesses in town for many years until it closed in 1906 due to financial problems associated with railroad development around that time The first post office was established in 1865 and renamed Racine because Railroads reached there first. In 1907, Kenosha incorporated as a village under Chilton Act No 8897-1907 which granted villages power to levy taxes without City Council approval In 1916, World War I began with Germany invading Belgium and Luxembourg; by 1917 their planes were over Paris so local farmers began manufacturing planes out of materials they could find lying around their properties including trees from nearby forests which had been cut down for fuel sources or lumber An agreement was made between United States forces occupying Europe and Russia allowing Russian POWs who hadn't yet been repatriated to be given free land near Racine if they lived among White settlers Kenosha developed an agricultural economy based primarily on raising chickens, pigs, cows and wheat until about 1950 when jet travel eliminated most demand for rural goods Transportation costs made this business model unsustainable so by 1960 chicken operations were discontinued while pork production continued until 1985 when all land within 2 miles of city limits reverted back to forest

The history of Kenosha goes back to 1845 when John Hennepin settler George Herring built a log cabin on what is now State Road 54 near present day Kenosha Lake. In 1847, Frenchman Pierre Dorion arrived in the area and set up a fur trade business with local Indians before moving his family to central Wisconsin in 1851. By 1865, there were over 20 French Canadians living in Kenosha County. In 1893, village incorporation took place as part of an effort by residents to keep their community running while they awaited development along then-modern Highway 24 which would eventually become I-94. As early as 1848, people had been planning to erect a store and sawmill on Milwaukee's north side; however no action was taken until 1892 after representatives from various villages met in Racine for discussions about forming an agricultural society for southern KenosHA county (the so-called "Milwaukee Purchase"). On February 6th 1903, village voters passed an ordinance making it illegal for any person not registered with the village to open or operate any business without first being approved by an elected board made up of six residents appointed by Mayor Harry Auerbachs (term expired). This prohibition applied regardless of whether such business existed within one year or had been operating since March 1st 1902 - thus keeping businesses like Eddie's sawmill open until recently despite having been closed by City Council members during infancy
