In 1868, John Prentice built Kessels Mills on what are now North Avenue and West Street near present day Waukesha Boulevard. This mill produced flour until it burned down in 1886; however, Kessels Mills continues to be cited as one of the earliest open-air mills west of Chicago – it was also one of the few such mills still functioning today! In 1902, local granite quarry owner Matson Brothers donated land east of downtown for a new public library (now known as Northwestern Mutual Library). In 1907 construction began on what would become one of KenosHA's most distinctive landmarks – City Hall – which opened in 1908. During World War II, Kenoasha served as an air raid warning center for all Milwaukee County residents living within 100 miles (160 km) thereof; during that time it also operated as a Japanese internment camp for American citizens held during World War II without trial or rights under US law!
