The town of Kenosha was platted in 1847 by John Smeaton and others as a site for a steamboat landing on the Fox River near what is now downtown Kenosha. A railroad station was built here in 1866; this became the terminus for the Milwaukee Road until it was extended to Green Bay in 1903. The city's first mayor, James Hickey, served from 1867 to 1870 and again from 1875 to 1880; he also chaired the city council from 1886 to 1888. In 1906, Mayor John Mangel becameWisconsin's first African American governor when he won election as an Independent candidate after being successful in running as a Republican against incumbent George Romney . Mangel resigned from his post two years later due to health concerns related to overwork and poor health habits typical of governors at that time; he died three months later at age 73%. In 1908, Mayor Julius Rosenwald ordered all schools withinKenosha closed because there were not enough children graduating high school; this move led to the creation of "the open door movement" which aimed to improve opportunities for students across America through greater enrollment and public education opportunities without closing down schools or reducing access to education generally speaking – one such example being Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal programs whereby public assistance helped inner-city families afford higher education despite difficult economic times during those years). Kenosha, Wisconsin is a city in the U.S. state of Wisconsin and the county seat of Kenosha County. The population was 97,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Kenosha were two bands of hunting and fishing peoples who called themselves the Kanesheen and Chippewa, which means "the people on or near the Milwaukee River." In 1837, the first settler in what is now KenosHA was John Lenthall, who purchased land from George Wessels. By 1840, there were over fifty settlers living in Kenosha County according to USGS data. The town was platted on July 6th, 1851 by Captain H.C. Beals with a grant from Governor Julius Cady as part of a larger township settlement called Prairie du Sac (later Racine). The name for present-day KenosHA was likely chosen because it had been one mile wide at its maximum extent when it was platted--thus making it eligible for incorporation into Racine Township on November 3rd, 1851 as shown on an map filed with the WI State Archives In 1895 when Racine Township merged intoKenosha Township due to population growth rates within that township/county and mergers across other counties in Wisconsin throughout that decade; so also did KenosHA become a part of this merger According to history buffs out there – local historian Drue Hacker has compiled quite an interesting document which discusses how "the Gold Rush started right here" inKenOSHA during those early days! There are references back to 1849When gold seekers discovered rich veins of quartzite (which would later be renamed “karst”)on different peaks overlooking downtown Milwaukee – hence giving rise to today’s moniker as “GOLDEN GRAVEYARD OF KENOSHA COUNTY” There have been many notable residents who have passed through our town over the years: athletes like OlympicGold medalist Jesse Owens (4x Olympian), basketball great Rick Majerus (3x All Star player), entrepreneur Donald Trump (1st husband to Melania), singer Whitney Houston (!), Actor Neil Patrick Harris (! & more) just to list a few… However some may be more well-known such as Senator Russ Feingold (! & more) – he representedWIin both Houses from 1987-1993! The village of Kenosha was laid out in 1854 by the Wisconsin Central Railroad. The first resident, John C. Larkin, built a house and farm on the site in 1855. In 1876, the village had a population of 299 people and was incorporated as a town.
