The area now known as Kenosha was first settled by the Potawatomi tribe in 1836. A post office called "Kenosha" was established in 1841, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The village of Kenosha was organized on April 15, 1903, from parts of Racine and Waukesha counties. The name "Kenosha" originated with one Jens Christensen, an early settler who founded a lumber company there in 1853. In 1967, the towns of Arnot Heights and Wauwatosa were merged to form Kenosha-Arnot Heights Township. In 1976, the townships were again merged to form Kenosha-Wauwatosa Township; however, this merger did not take effect until 2007 because Arnot Heights had already been annexed by Milwaukee County as part of that year's annexation plan for that city

Kenosha, Wisconsin is a city located in the Milwaukee metropolitan area. The population was 174,821 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth largest city in Wisconsin and the second most populous city in Milwaukee County. The history of Kenosha dates back to 1854 when it was part of Racine County. In 1868, it became an independent municipality and was renamed Kenosha after John A. Kenosha, a senator from Iowa who had been elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 1880. The town of Kenosha was platted on April 1, 1854 by George Ripley and others under the name of "Racine Township". On December 11, 1874, Racine township was dissolved and merged into Kenosha with all its lands subject to that name becoming part of the new municipality. On May 10, 1886, the town of Kenosha voted to become an incorporated village with full powers to operate local government within its borders – this action marked the first time municipal status had been conferred on any town in Wisconsin since before statehood in 1907! On October 15, 1912, pursuant to decisions of aldermen James Ducharme and Maurice Jorgensen (the two men who would later serve as Mayor and Police Chief respectively), KenosHA passed an ordinance establishing Prohibitionism as one of its official policies! This ordinance remains one of only two ordinances extant from that time period which embrace Prohibitionist ideology! In 1948-1949 during Bucks County’s rapid growth following World War II there were plans for what would become known as “The Village” development adjacent to current day White Marsh Road/Upper Silesian Road intersection just east of downtownKenOSHA!!! That never happened however because then-county executive Robert LaFollette vetoed all plans due to their proximity to Interstate 94 which he saw as a threat not just To his own political career but also To potential job growth for nearby municipalities like White Marsh & Ironwood which lay directly across I-94 & could have taken advantage of tax breaks & other assistance from LaFollette if those plans had gone through
Kenosha was founded in 1836 by John L. Kenosha and Moses S. Stevens as a town on the Milwaukee River. The city's first store, built on the corner of State and Market Streets, opened in 1840. The city grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s, thanks to heavy trade with the nearby cities of Milwaukee and Chicago. In 1865, Kenosha became one of Wisconsin's thirty-six towns and was named for George Washington County, Illinois native John L. Kenosha. In 1872, Kenosha annexed portions of Waukesha County; this annexation made it the second-largest city in Wisconsin after Milwaukee. By 1890, KenosHA had grown to its current size with a population of over 100,000 people.. During World War II, Kenosha was an important manufacturing center for munitions production; its paper products were key to Allied victory. After the war ended in 1945,kenOSHA returned to rapid growth as a suburb of Milwaukee until it finally merged with that city in 1997 into what is now known as Milwaukee County
